Biography
Born in the Soviet Union, on the run, Sound of Music style through Europe & eventually landing in her new home, Australia, this Sydney DJ and producer is considered spinning royalty in her adopted country. Pioneering many club nights, including Sydney’s iconic Queer Central, she has worked every veritable corner of the scene — both above ground and below — to master a sound that is quintessentially Sveta.
The company this unique talent keeps is testament to her work and has seen her play along side the likes of Derrick Carter, The Presets, Frankie Knuckles, Honey Dijon, Andy Butler & Kim Ann Foxman, Kylie Minogue, The Scissor Sisters, Boy George, Azealia Banks, David Morales, Deep Dish, John Digweed & K-Hand to name a few. Regularly on demand, Sveta continues to work the stage with both legendary and emerging DJs who share her passion for breaking new ground.
On tour Sveta has supported artists including Peaches, Amanda Palmer, LCD Soundsystem, The Julie Ruin, Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), spun the beats for Shunda K (Yo Majesty!) and collaborated with Emmy Award winning pianist & composer, Lance Horne on a live piano/house set at the Sydney Opera House & BAM Brooklyn. She’s also regularly curated as a DJ/ collaborator at arts events for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Carriageworks, Vivid Live, Opera Australia, Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Opera House.
As a Music Director, this multi-faceted talent has carved out an additional niche by framing some of the country’s largest fashion events with her signature style, including 15 years of runway soundtracks at MBFWA (Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia) as well as being their resident DJ. Such events have included fashion shows for Chanel, VOGUE, Collette Dinnigan (Paris Fashion Week), Zimmermann, Bec & Bridge, CAMEO, Johanna Johnson, AJE, 5 years with Steven Khalil (Inc. Paris Couture FW ’19), as well as her 15-year collaboration as Music Director for top Australian haute couture designer & judge on ANTM, Alex Perry. alexperry.com.au.
Sveta has also made her mark abroad in cities including London, Paris, Verona, Japan, Barcelona, Toronto Copenhagen, Toronto, Berlin, New Zealand, with her biggest audience outside of Australia being in NYC, where she has toured extensively for 10 years and regularly plays in venues like Le Bain at The Standard Hotel and for the cities most underground and celebrated promoters and Club Kids & POC Vogue Balls (11:11/ LadyFag/ Susanne Bartsch etc) Sveta’s current project is LAPLUSTRE – a performance & production collaboration with rock/electronic musician & DJ Estée Louder. Together they have remixed commissioned music for Qantas Airways, Betty Who Betty Who & First Nations superstar Jessica Mauboy & composed musical scores for RUSSH online, Oroton, Alex Perry, First Nations Dance show NGOENAKAP by NAISDA (Carriageworks, Nov 2019) & 3 years of trailer music for Queer Screen. Laplustre produces original music primarily in the Technosphere.
Sveta’s extensive work with marginalised communities has spanned 30 years & has included hands-on volunteering, fundraising events & community development projects in both the health sector & the creation of community spaces. As a female Queer refugee migrant in Australia herself, this work has always been the most important to her. Sveta was the founder/ booker & resident DJ of legendary Kingki Kingdom / Queer Central night at that spanned a decade (2002 – 2012) & ignited the world-wide Drag King movement (Ref Intimate Investments in Drag King Culture by Dr Kerryn Drysdale). She is regularly engaged in projects with the LGBTQI First Nations Community, LGBTQI sports teams, Queer Irish, the Marriage Equality movement, the creation of LGBTQI safe spaces, assisting & upskilling POC’s, older members of the community and under 18 youth. Her life-long work has recently been recognised by several awards. Sveta holds the record for DJ appearances at Sydney Mardi Gras & Sleaze Ball Parties with 30 appearances. She was also the main curator of 2018’s 40th Anniversary Sydney Mardi Gras Party – their most successful event in over a decade. In 2018, Sveta received the Gay & Lesbian Rights lobby Supporter of the Year Award & was the 2019 winner of the Mardi Gras Lifetime Achievement Award.
DJ Sveta is a truly multi-genre DJ. She intuitively reads her audience and plays accordingly, drawing from her enormous library of classic, current and emerging sounds, weaving her way seamlessly through the tracks. She dauntlessly crosses between disco and house, vogue beats to tribal, tech, techno and beyond. A 10,000+ vinyl collection spanning over 2 decades teamed with her passion for discovering new styles yields a unique freshness to Sveta’s sound. Her lifelong obsession with dance music gives her the unique ability to contextualise the music within her sets. Her flawless mixing skills assist her in taking the listener on a heartfelt journey, from a purist House or Techno set to a multi-genre party experience.
Sveta is comfortable playing just about any musical genre. Sveta truly loves most music styles & chooses the best tracks in each style.
She is particularly fond of classic disco, nudisco, classic house, punk/ funk, good quality funky house/ outdoor Ibiza chilled house, House, music from any Ethnic culture,electro-rock, some funk and classic rap & hip hop, sophisticated chill out music, (the kind of tunes you’d hear at fashion events – FKA Twigs, remixed swing, remixed Billy Holliday etc, Electro Jazz Swing).
